"Probiotics are living microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host" - this is the official definition of probiotic bacteria from the WHO/FAO, made in 2001. This means that probiotic bacteria must meet special requirements. First and foremost, it is important that the bacteria survive the stomach acids and bile undamaged. This is because unprotected strains of bacteria can lose their viability within a very short time, becoming ineffective. The products should also be present in high concentrations.
There is a wide variety of probiotic strains of bacteria that have a clinically proven effect on the gastrointestinal tract. It is the following probiotic bacteria that are predominantly used in medical applications: Lactobacilli, Bifidobacteria, Enterococcus faecalis und Escherichia coli. A combination of select probiotic intestinal bacteria, in high concentration, ensures the desired health benefit.
There is now a wealth of clinical studies on probiotics. Probiotics can be taken at any age. It has been found that babies born by Caesarean section and bottle-fed infants have a different intestinal flora to babies born vaginally and those who are breastfed. Probiotics are also frequently used for babies suffering from colic. Older children often suffer from asthma, allergies and neurodermatitis and antibiotics can cause a change in the composition of the gut flora. Researchers are currently looking at diseases of the nervous system, where it appears that poor intestinal flora may play a role.
