There are numerous bioactive bacterial supplements on the market in various forms. Besides drops, powders, and capsules, bioactive chewable tablets are now available. This clever form guarantees very easy and convenient intake of probiotics, making them particularly attractive for children. However, the question remains: How many bacteria actually reach the gut?

Issues with Stomach and Bile Acids
The stomach is our first line of defense and uses acid to ward off a variety of microorganisms. Later, bile acids come into play, which, in addition to fat digestion, are also responsible for defending against microorganisms. This is the critical point when administering biologically active bacteria: unprotected bacteria cannot survive stomach and bile acids and therefore cannot exert their effect at the target site in the intestines.
Patented Protection through INTELICAPS®
Intelicaps® is a patented encapsulation technology for biologically active bacterial cultures at a microscopic level. It consists of a plant-based shell made from algae. During production, the materials are mixed and divided into numerous small droplets.
Advantages of Intelicaps®
The Intelicaps® protection technology offers numerous advantages. It ensures resistance to stomach and bile acids so that biologically active bacteria reach the intestines unharmed. The microscopic protection dissolves only in the small intestine, where optimal living conditions exist.
Additionally, the technology guarantees high storage stability. Biologically active preparations can be easily mixed into beverages or liquids. The heat-resistant capsule also allows use in warm meals. Another advantage is the possibility of pressing biologically active bacteria into chewable tablets and a long shelf life of the products.
Proof via the SHIME Method
The biologically active preparations are tested using the SHIME method (Simulator of the Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem). This method realistically simulates the human digestive system in the laboratory. Environmental conditions such as temperature, pH levels, oxygen partial pressures, and enzyme composition are accurately replicated.
At Ghent University, around 160 internationally recognized studies have been published on this method. The results show that biologically active bacteria protected with Intelicaps® reach the intestine up to 100 times more frequently.
Conclusion
Biologically active chewable tablets are effective and efficient when the contained bacterial cultures are protected by the Intelicaps® technology against the effects of stomach and bile acids. Their efficacy has been clearly confirmed by scientific studies.
