Help for mothers and midwives on site

Fanajana eV supports midwives in Madagascar with training, medical supplies, and the development of basic care structures. The goal is to enable safe births and sustainably improve healthcare for mothers and newborns. The focus is always on concrete, on-site assistance.

Fanajana means “respectful” in Malagasy.

That's why midwife Claudia Schweppe-Unruh and gynecologist Dr. Martin Frank deliberately chose this term to found their association in 2018 to support the obstetric situation in Madagascar. Madagascar is one of the poorest countries in the world. The southern part of the country is very poor, even by Malagasy standards, and medical infrastructure is almost nonexistent. For pregnant women, this means that they often have to walk distances of 20 km or more in extreme pain to reach a care center. It is not uncommon for mothers or children to not survive this ordeal. Even if they do, there is usually only one midwife on site who has to care for all mothers around the clock, 7 days a week. Last but not least, reaching the care center offers no reason for reassurance, other than the fact that the hygienic conditions are often catastrophic and wound care supplies and anesthetics are almost non-existent. In the case of complications, there are 16 doctors per 100,000 inhabitants in Madagascar, compared to 440 in Germany, and the ratio is even lower in southern Madagascar. For pregnant women, this creates a collection of distressing circumstances that Fanajana eV no longer accepts.

HLH BioPharma supports the construction of the new health center.

HLH BioPharma is a medium-sized family business that has been active in the field of probiotics and vital substances for more than 25 years. The health of infants and children is very important to us. We were therefore very impressed by the commitment of midwife Claudia Schweppe-Unruh in East Africa. We are therefore supporting the construction of the new medical health center with a donation of 10,000 euros. It is important to us to continue to raise awareness for this important project. Would you like to find out more about the construction or help yourself? Follow our social media and find out more about the construction phase. Or visit the Fanajana eV website.

The Fanajana eV project

Fanajana eV has already implemented a number of projects over the last four years. In addition to building wells and water towers and a school with its own school garden, further training and continuing education measures are carried out for medical staff in simple health facilities. The projects are planned for the long term, as the food from the school garden is used to feed the students at lunch. Surpluses are sold by the families at the market. The population is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the water towers that have been built. The aim is for the local population to be able to help themselves in the future and not to become permanently dependent on donations. The current project includes the planning and implementation of a health center around 20 km from the town of Ejeda. This health center is intended to serve seven surrounding villages and is intended to be a contact point for pregnant women, women giving birth and the sick.
