Probiotika gegen Depressionen

Probiotics against depression

Gut-Brain Axis

The so-called gut-brain axis describes the connection between the human brain and the gastrointestinal tract. Gut bacteria can influence the nervous system through their metabolic products. It is already known that depression is often associated with gut and digestive problems. The relationships between the gut microbiome and mental health are continuously being researched.

Basel Study

In a 2022 study conducted by the University of Basel, a research team investigated how the intake of probiotics affects patients with depression. A total of 47 participants were involved and stayed for 31 days in inpatient treatment under observation. Unknowingly, 21 participants received a probiotic in addition to antidepressants, while 26 participants received a placebo. The results were analyzed after 31 days and again 4 weeks later. The condition of the participants who took both antidepressants and probiotics improved significantly more. The bacterial composition of the gut flora also changed positively, producing additional health-promoting effects on the body. It is known that certain brain regions involved in emotional processing behave differently in people with depression compared to healthy individuals. Analysis after another 4 weeks showed normalization of brain activity in participants who took both antidepressants and probiotics.

The Casa Sana Maxiamin can support you in this context. Conclusion Probiotics alone are not sufficient to cure people with depression. However, they support certain health-promoting processes in the body. Additionally, a 31-day intake is too short; the optimal duration for probiotic supplementation is 3–6 months. In the future, it would be interesting to optimize the selection of bacterial strains so that they can be used to support specific diseases with targeted effects.
